There was this amazing transformation before my eyes-in music, by metaphor, a change, a bridge: a cured disease as a beautiful woman! I envisioned Lazarus at the crossroads before his leprosy really killed in, playing a guitar, a cigarette the color of bone dangling out of the corner of his mouth...playing excruciating body blues for passing change, breathing clouds in the bleached rainbow arch of the city gate.

Around his head after he was resurrected from the dead, and that blue shadow of the sun at the tunnel before he went on made me think that there was nobody who had been at death's door or beyond as often as him. When I see him dressed as a sheik, I see Lazarus rising from the dead, removing his burial shroud, then I hear a nasal, cracked snarl of truth about addiction that is as tough as it is compassionate:

Worked the bars and sideshows along the twilight zone
Only a crowd can make you feel so alone
And it really hit home
Booze and pills and powders, you can choose your medicine
Well here's another goodbye to another good friend
