Dear Pharmacist,
I have been on Methadone for 5 years and take 200 milligrams of
Methadone per day; I am 50 years old, 6'2", and 230 lbs.
My question is as follows:
Recently I was in the hospital with a broken hip. The hospital
Emergency room doctor had no idea what to prescribe for me to help with the pain.
She asked me and I told her Morphine which she immediately gave me. The
problem is that it was not enough. She gave me 4 MG 1 hour later 4 Mg 1hour
later 2 mg. I kept telling her that it wasn't enough but she said what amount
do I need and I did not know. For the future can you advise me what dosage
and what medicine will work the best for me when something this serious
happens.
Later I had surgery for 4 hours and they gave me an epidural and numbed
my lower body, which worked great. Again the Anastasias person was afraid
to put me under. How do I handle this in the future? Any help you can
give me will be well appreciated.

Q & A
Dear Bill,
I am an addiction medicine physician who answers some of the questions
from Heroin Times. The equivalent dose of morphine to 200 mg of methadone is
100 mg of morphine when the morphine is given intramuscularly or IV. It
would be important for your anesthesiologist to contact an addiction medicine
specialist next time to help with medication issues. No one needs to
suffer with pain.
I hope this helps.
