THERESA
WOMEN AND ADDICTION
a monthly column of women's stories

told by lisbeth west

"I started using drugs at age 10. My sister used heroin and introduced me to my first fix when I was sixteen."
Theresa had three sisters and three brothers. "My little sister passed away over two years ago." She was chasing the nod and found her last bite of the beast. She died "due to a heroin overdose," Theresa shares.

"My mother died of cancer about two years ago. She was an alcoholic. I didn't know my dad very well but his house is filled with lots of booze."
Theresa talks about the family that she saw go before her and after her. They all found their way into the seductive life of chasing that first high.... wanting more... and then more... So far, only one has lost her life to it.
The others didn't notice much--rippin' and runnin' to find their own perfect bite of the beast... without the sting.

"There are many things that I had to go through along the way that are very painful." Today, Theresa is unraveling her life of pain. She works to get through it--not around it.
"I don't have to use today to go through what I need to go through. I have learned that I don't need to pick up no matter what, cause that's not the answer any more." "I never knew how to feel the feelings, which is the reason why I tried so hard to kill them," she tells me. "Yea, I came close to prostitution and I did steal a lot."
