Family Matters

A few months ago, I left the State of California, with my new wife, well-aware that I would be in violation of my parole. Mostly a reaction to the disruption of being placed in yet another drug-infested rehab facility, leaving California also meant leaving the excessive restrictions of my biased Parole Officer. Serving 2 years and 7 months for possession of 1/100th of a gram of heroin, was more than enough time to serve. Being threatened by violent gang members at the rehab facility became an everyday occurrence, and I soon got tired of it.

My wife and I took a huge gamble and headed East, with very little finances and no jobs waiting for us. Upon arrival to our final mid-west destination, we soon ran out of money. Thank God we made a decision to leave our daughter with her aunt in Colorado, until we got settled. Within two weeks, however, I was hired by a catering company as a banquet server. Two weeks later, I was promoted to a managerial position, in charge of scheduling staff for parties and hiring part time help, which included three recovering addicts. I even had an office and a phone line.
We lived in a motel for the next two months, living from paycheck to

paycheck until my wife got the design job she had been seeking. We eventually found a two bedroom house rental in the best part of the city, and immediately made plans to pick up our daughter from Colorado.
Everything seemed to be falling into place, prompting my wife, on more than one occasion, to suggest informing my P.O., back in California, of our new location and how well I was doing. But I wouldn't allow it. Knowing he would just use me, like before, to fill parolee bed spaces in rehabs after a possibly lengthy violation.
